God’s Gift of Reason in Science and in Theology People seem to think that scientific reason and religious faith have to be at odds. But it was people of faith who were the first remarkable scientists, people like Kepler and Newton and Maxwell. In our sessions on 17 and 24 August we will use the Catechism's study of the Apostles' Creed to probe the difference between reason as servant and reason as ruler. (What is "reason" anyway?!) We will study popular misunderstandings of scientific reasoning and of the Bible that lead many people to think science is incompatible with Christian faith. The goal is to help Christians bring light rather than heat to debates over science, intelligent design, and the Bible.

Preschool Prayer List: Many members of Light of Christ have been praying for a preschooler and their family. I want to encourage you to continue to do so. When we hear of special requests we have passed those on. Please pray that the families of our preschoolers are healthy- physically and spiritually and to use Light of Christ’s preschool staff and the congregation to share the love of Christ with them.
Baghdad Hobby Club Not everyone who goes into combat receives a physical wound. There are many who serve daily; afflicted with emotional wounds that are often kept silent. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and depression are two of the most common ailments that affect military men & women. One of the methods that the military has used to address these issues is the establishment of “Combat Stress Clinics” - something new to this war. One method used to relieve stress is the building of scale models. In fact, one of our regular visitors has donated a number of models kits for use in these clinics. How can you participate? Please donate to the “Combat Stress Clinic” project through Light of Christ Lutheran Church. Your donations will support the purchasing of supplies (glue, paint, sand paper, etc) and shipping (to Iraq) costs. Along with these materials we will include bible tracts, Portals of Prayer and a letter from our congregation. We can support our military regardless of our political feelings. Won't you help this great cause? If you wish to contribute, make a check out to LOC and put it in an envelope marked “BHC”.
Sunday School Teacher: Are you the person we need? There is an opening for a Sunday School Teacher this summer. Team teaching is always a possiblity - share the time with one or two more people. Contact the church office with any questions (949) 786-3326.
Kobon Ministry Weekly Prayer Focus
Pastor John and Maila Davies
Papua New Guinea August 19, 2008
We give thanks to the Lord that the newly elected President and Vice-President of the Kobon-Haruai-Minimib Local Government Council are committed Christians. They are enthusiastic supporters of the work of the Living Word schools. The Vice-President was previously chairman of the board of one of the schools in the Asbor school district.
Please pray for a good reception of our five-year plan for education in the area submitted to the Council at the request of the President. Also pray for our request that the Local Government Council move towards assuming responsibility for and ownership of the schools, which we submitted to the Council last month at the request of the Vice-President and Council Program Manager.
This week pray for the school at Wowo, teachers Stephen Kiomb and Neson Nikolas, and all the students.
